SJC Officially Launches with Support from Founding Industry Ecosystem Partners
Hong Kong | April 2026
The Sustainable Jewelry Council (SJC) is pleased to officially announce its establishment as an independent industry initiative dedicated to advancing sustainability, transparency, and responsible development across the global jewelry value chain.
Registered in Hong Kong as Sustainable Jewelry Council Limited, SJC is established with the mission to build a practical and transparent sustainability framework for the jewelry industry, covering diamonds, precious metals, gemstones, and finished jewelry products.
SJC aims to serve as an open platform for industry collaboration, bringing together stakeholders across upstream production, midstream manufacturing, laboratory services, and downstream retail and brand channels.
A New Industry Initiative for Measurable Sustainability
As sustainability becomes a defining issue for the future of the jewelry sector, the industry increasingly requires a framework that is both technically credible and commercially practical.
SJC is founded to address this need.
The Council’s initial focus is the development of the Carbon Verified framework, a methodology-based sustainability verification system designed to improve carbon transparency and disclosure practices within the jewelry supply chain.
This framework is intended to support industry participants in aligning with globally recognized sustainability principles, including:
OECD due diligence guidance
UN Global Compact principles
relevant global sustainability reporting practices
responsible sourcing and supply chain transparency standards
Rather than acting as a direct emissions auditor, SJC serves as the steward of governance, methodology, and industry collaboration.
SJC is honored to launch with the support of its first group of industry ecosystem partners, whose participation reflects growing momentum for collaborative sustainability efforts across the sector.
Among the first supporting partners is GemIntLab (GIL), an international gemological laboratory headquartered in the United States, specializing in diamond, colored gemstone, and jewelry testing services.
As one of the earliest ecosystem partners, GIL will collaborate with SJC on the advancement of sustainability-linked grading and verification initiatives, including the industry concept of “5C” for lab-grown diamonds, where Carbon Verification complements the traditional 4C grading system.
This collaboration marks an important step toward connecting gemological standards with measurable sustainability data.
SJC welcomes additional founding partners from across the jewelry ecosystem, including laboratories, manufacturers, brands, retailers, refiners, and industry institutions.
The Council believes that sustainability cannot be achieved by a single company or a single segment of the supply chain.
It requires ecosystem-wide participation.
SJC therefore positions itself as a collaborative platform for standards dialogue, methodology development, and industry education, with future initiatives expected to include:
sustainability white papers
carbon methodology guidelines
industry workshops and roundtables
ecosystem partnership programs
public transparency resources
“Sustainability in jewelry must move beyond concepts and become measurable, transparent, and commercially actionable.
SJC is created to help the industry build this shared framework together.”
